Matthias Oestringer
Matthias Oestringer is a violin and viola pedagogue and performing musician with more than thirty years of teaching and performing experience. Renowned for his thoughtful and individual approach to pedagogy, he has guided numerous students toward artistic and technical excellence, many of whom have gone on to become prize winners in international competitions.
Born and trained in Germany, Matthias was awarded First Prize in the prestigious German national competition Jugend Musiziert in 1995. His deep connection to musical education later led him to serve as a jury member for the same competition, as well as for the international Ferenc Liszt Competition. In 2025 he was invited to serve on the jury of an International Music Competition in Singapore, further reflecting his standing within the international music education community.
After teaching at the Emmerich Smola Music Academy in Germany from 2000 to 2002, Matthias relocated to Singapore, where he has been active as an educator and performer for more than two decades. He currently serves as a lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and teaches at Fidelio Music Studio. In recognition of his dedication to music education, he was awarded the Cristofori Teachers' Award in 2006.
Alongside his teaching career, Matthias maintains an active presence as a performing musician. He is a founding member of the Concordia Quartet and has performed with numerous orchestras in Singapore, including the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra Singapore, where he served as principal violist, and the Singapore Lyric Opera Orchestra. He has also appeared as Principal Second Violin with New Opera Singapore.
In 2025 he served as Principal Violist in the Singapore production of Sunset Boulevard by Andrew Lloyd Webber and is listed as Principal Violist for the Singapore season of The Phantom of the Opera.
In addition to his performing and teaching activities, Matthias is also an author. In 2024 he published the book Echoes of Home – Education Harmony, reflecting on more than two decades of life and musical work in Singapore.
With a teaching career that began at the age of eighteen, Matthias brings deep pedagogical experience, artistic insight, and a strong commitment to nurturing each student according to their individual musical voice.
