Foundations of Effective Practice
Consistent, focused daily practice is essential for developing true mastery of a musical instrument. Musical progress is not achieved through occasional effort, but through regular and mindful engagement with the instrument. Each practice session builds upon the previous one, strengthening technical control, refining listening skills, and deepening musical understanding.
Daily practice allows the body and mind to develop the coordination, precision, and sensitivity required for expressive playing. Short but concentrated sessions are often far more effective than long, unfocused ones. Through disciplined repetition and thoughtful work, students gradually transform technical challenges into natural musical expression.
For this reason, structured daily practice forms the foundation of all successful musical training. It cultivates discipline, patience, and artistic awareness—qualities that enable students not only to improve steadily, but also to experience the deeper satisfaction and joy of making music.
Echoes of Home
It has been 22 years! 22 years in a completely different society, country, and continent. I find it easy to adapt to almost any environment without major problems, and although there were some minor struggles, I would say it went smoothly. As I write this, I am approaching my 50th birthday, and my intention is to reflect on the past years, particularly the ones spent living and teaching in Singapore. This is not meant to be an autobiography—I do not believe I have a life that would interest others. I am not famous.
The main reason I decided to make this public is for my students and their parents. It will be beneficial for them to understand my way of thinking and teaching, what I expect, and what I don’t like. It also provides insight into why I do things the way I do. Additionally, I have included some of my teaching methods that have worked for me. Anyone starting their career in violin teaching might find my experiences helpful.
